About Bandiau Pres Cymru // Brass Bands Wales

Bandiau Pres Cymru // Brass Bands Wales is the national representative body for brass bands across Wales. We exist to promote, support, and advocate for the brass band movement, celebrating its rich heritage, strengthening its future, and amplifying the voice of Welsh bands on both national and international stages.


About the Role

The Safeguarding Lead will provide guidance and support on all safeguarding matters for Brass Bands Wales, helping to ensure safe, inclusive, and supportive environments for young people and vulnerable adults. The role will also assist individual bands across Wales in understanding and meeting their own safeguarding responsibilities, guiding good practice and signposting appropriate policies and procedures.

This is an important volunteer role that will help embed strong safeguarding practices across programmes, events, and partnerships, supporting the wellbeing of musicians and participants. The role is intended to support and guide bands rather than to police or enforce compliance, helping to build confidence and good safeguarding practice across the movement. Brass Bands Wales is committed to creating safe, inclusive and welcoming environments for all participants in the brass band community.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a PR and social media strategy aligned with BPC // BBW’s aims and campaigns.Act as the primary safeguarding contact for BPC // BBW.
  • Provide advice and guidance to the Working Group on safeguarding policy and best practice.
  • Support the development, review, and implementation of safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Ensure appropriate safeguarding considerations are in place for events, programmes, and activities delivered or supported by BPC // BBW.
  • Provide guidance and signposting to brass bands in Wales to help them understand and meet their own safeguarding responsibilities and adopt good safeguarding practice.
  • Maintain appropriate records of safeguarding concerns and ensure these are handled confidentially and in line with policy.
  • Signpost safeguarding concerns to appropriate statutory agencies where necessary.
  • Promote a culture of safeguarding awareness and good practice across the organisation and the wider brass band community in Wales.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Understanding of safeguarding principles relating to children and vulnerable adults.
  • Good judgement, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive matters confidentially.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide clear advice and guidance to a volunteer-led organisation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small volunteer team.

Desirable

  • Experience of safeguarding roles within education, youth organisations, sport, or the arts.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding requirements within Welsh cultural or community organisations.
  • Relevant safeguarding training or professional experience.
  • Welsh language skills (desirable but not essential).

Governance Requirements

As this role involves responsibility for safeguarding oversight, the successful applicant may be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, or the Welsh equivalent, where appropriate. Any offer of appointment may be conditional upon satisfactory completion of the required checks.

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake appropriate safeguarding training relevant to the role. Where necessary, Brass Bands Wales will support the individual in accessing suitable training to ensure they are equipped to carry out the responsibilities of Safeguarding Lead.

Time Commitment

Flexible, approximately 4 to 8 hours per month, depending on activity level and events.
